In short

  • Indicated for synovial joints, which include the ankle.1
  • Studied in the knee.3
  • Three ingredients, one pre-filled syringe, one injection per treatment.2
  • Whether it is an option for you is decided by the clinician who examines your ankle.

The ankle

The ankle is a hinge. The lower ends of the two shin bones sit over the dome of the talus, the bone that links the leg to the foot, with cartilage and joint fluid between them.

Ankle osteoarthritis is less common than in the knee or hip and usually follows an old fracture or repeated sprains rather than wear alone. The joint stiffens and hurts on walking, especially on uneven ground.

How it tends to show

  • Pain across the front of the ankle on walking, worse on slopes or rough ground.
  • Stiffness after rest and a smaller range of movement than the other ankle.
  • Swelling over the front of the joint after activity.
  • A past ankle fracture or repeated sprains on that side.

Application

The needle is placed into the front of the ankle joint, usually with ultrasound guidance because the joint space is narrow. One pre-filled syringe is injected. The manufacturer describes two treatment cycles a year, six months apart.2

Research

TriCombo’s published clinical study is in the knee: a 2025 single-centre study of Kombihylan, the combination the manufacturer names as TriCombo’s active principles, which measured the properties of the joint fluid six weeks after injection.3,2
